A brilliant exploration of the role of the intelligence services in Britain´s end of Empire. Empire of Secrets offers a compelling new chapter in the history of Britain´s last days of empire, as well as adding to our understanding of the Cold War and the history of international relations since 1945. The high-octane narrative encompasses everything from British wartime espionage campaigns waged in the deserts of North Africa, to shady backchannel communications brokered with African dictators; from violent counter-insurgencies fought by British forces in the jungles of Malaya and Kenya, and the hills of Cyprus, to urban warfare campaigns conducted in Palestine and the Arabian Peninsula. Among the book´s many revelations, it uncovers CIA plots and covert activities in British colonies, KGB assassinations, and failed coups sponsored by the British and US governments in the Middle East, primarily aimed at securing oil and other natural resources. Packed full of incidents straight out of a John le Carre novel, Empire of Secrets is an exhilarating read by an exciting new voice in intelligence history.
